How We Amplified the Stories of 40+ HBCUs Shaping Future Leaders

The HBCU Career Development Marketplace (HBCU CDM) needed a video that captured the energy and purpose of its annual career fair, which is helping students see real opportunities and inspiring employers to engage. I led the creative direction, scripting, and art direction for the promo video used across digital campaigns and event promotions.

Background

Each year, the HBCU Career Development Marketplace brings together hundreds of students and employers from 40+ HBCUs nationwide. The challenge: how to tell their story in a way that feels authentic, inspiring, and true to the community.

Development Process

Creative Direction — Collaborated with the CEO and marketing director to define the story arc, visual tone, and key messages.
Storyboarding — Outlined every scene to align visuals with audience emotions and brand voice.
Production — Directed and edited multiple versions of the video, refining visuals and pacing based on board feedback.
Deliverables — Final 3–4 minute feature video and 3 Instagram Reels optimized for social engagement.

Hand-drawn black-and-white storyboard for the HBCU CDM promo video, showing each scene in order: opening headline (‘Looking for Opportunities’), title card, mission statement screen, events list, transition message, three student testimonial scenes, and a final frame with the HBCU CDM logo and contact information.

Impact

The video became a key storytelling tool for the HBCU Career Development Marketplace, helping boost post-event engagement across social platforms. It continues to serve as a flagship recruitment asset for future student outreach campaigns.
